An exterior door is more than just an entryway – it’s part of your home’s character and your first line of defence against the British weather. From driving rain and salty coastal air to winter frost and summer sun, your doors face a lot throughout the year. With a few simple routines and regular maintenance, you can keep them looking good and working smoothly for many years to come.

Know Your Material – and Treat It Right

The first step in proper care is understanding what your door is made of. Timber, steel, and composite doors each have their own needs.

  • Timber doors need regular surface treatment to resist moisture and UV damage. Check the paint, varnish, or oil at least once a year. If the finish looks dull, cracked, or rough, it’s time for a fresh coat.
  • Steel doors are durable but can develop scratches that lead to rust. Clean and touch up any damaged areas promptly with rust protection or matching paint.
  • Composite and uPVC doors require minimal upkeep, but they still benefit from cleaning and occasional lubrication to maintain their seals and smooth operation.

Knowing your door’s material helps you choose the right products and avoid damage that could easily be prevented.

Cleaning – the Overlooked Lifespan Booster

Dirt, salt, and pollution can gradually wear down the surface and seals of your door. A thorough clean a few times a year makes a big difference.

Use warm, soapy water and a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid pressure washers, as they can force water into joints and cause damage. Dry the door carefully afterwards, paying attention to hinges, locks, and weatherstrips.

A clean door not only lasts longer but also enhances your home’s kerb appeal.

Lubricate Hinges and Locks

Moving parts such as hinges, locks, and handles wear over time. A few drops of light, non-acidic oil or a specialist lock spray once or twice a year can prevent squeaks, rust, and stiff mechanisms.

While you’re at it, check that the door closes properly and doesn’t stick. If it does, the hinges may need adjusting, or the frame may have shifted slightly due to humidity. Small tweaks now can save you from costly repairs later.

Check Seals and Paintwork

Weather seals around the door are essential for keeping out draughts and damp. Over time, they can flatten or crack. Replace them if they no longer fit snugly – it’s an inexpensive way to improve comfort and energy efficiency.

For timber doors, the paint or oil finish is your main protection. Make sure the coating is intact, especially along the bottom edge where rainwater tends to collect. A quick repaint or re-oiling every few years can add decades to your door’s life.

Protect Against the Weather

Doors facing south or west often take the brunt of the sun and rain. Consider fitting a small canopy or porch to shield the door from the worst of the elements. This helps prevent fading, cracking, and water damage.

A sturdy doormat outside and a second one inside will also help keep grit and moisture away from the threshold – one of the most vulnerable parts of any exterior door.

A Small Effort with a Big Reward

Caring for your exterior doors doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming. A quick inspection and bit of maintenance a couple of times a year can prevent major problems and extend your door’s lifespan significantly. It’s all about spotting small issues before they grow – and giving your door the attention it deserves as a vital part of your home.
