Here’s how heat recovery works in the home – and how it can make your household more efficient.

What Is Domestic Heat Recovery?

Heat recovery is all about reusing the warmth that would otherwise be wasted. In a typical home, hot water from showers, sinks, and appliances flows into the drainage system, taking valuable heat with it. A heat recovery unit captures this energy and transfers it to the incoming cold water supply. As a result, your boiler or water heater needs less energy to reach the desired temperature.

The system works through a heat exchanger – a device that allows heat to pass from one water stream to another without mixing them. The warm wastewater flows past the cold mains water through a metal pipe or plate, transferring heat efficiently and safely. The preheated water then enters your hot water system, ready to be used again.

How the Technology Works in Practice

There are several types of domestic heat recovery systems, but they all follow the same principle: recovering heat from used water and reusing it. The most common options include:

  • Shower heat exchangers – installed beneath the shower tray or in the waste pipe. They recover heat from the water as it drains away, warming the incoming cold water in real time.
  • Central wastewater systems – connected to the home’s main drainage network, these can collect heat from multiple sources such as showers, washing machines, and kitchen sinks.
  • Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) – a whole-house system that recovers heat from outgoing air as well as water, improving overall energy efficiency and indoor air quality.

A well-designed system can typically recover between 40 and 70 per cent of the heat from wastewater. That means a significant reduction in the energy required to heat your water.

Benefits for Your Home and the Environment

The most immediate benefit is lower energy consumption. For an average UK household, recovering heat from shower water alone can reduce the energy used for hot water by 20–30 per cent. That translates into noticeable savings on your gas or electricity bills.

At the same time, using less energy means fewer carbon emissions. Heat recovery is therefore an effective way to make your home more sustainable and to support the UK’s drive towards net zero.

Other advantages include low maintenance and long service life. Most systems operate passively, without the need for electricity, and require little more than occasional cleaning to remove limescale or soap deposits.

Costs and Payback Time

The cost of a heat recovery system depends on the type and complexity of the installation. A simple shower heat exchanger can start from around £300–£600, while a central system for the whole house may cost between £1,500 and £3,000 including installation.

Payback times vary, but typically range from three to eight years depending on your household’s water use and energy prices. In new builds or major renovations, it’s often easiest and most cost-effective to include heat recovery from the start, when plumbing systems are being installed.

Installation and Maintenance

Most systems can be fitted by a qualified plumber or heating engineer and require minimal space. In existing homes, a shower heat exchanger is often the simplest starting point, as it can be retrofitted with relatively little disruption.

Maintenance is straightforward. Regular cleaning helps prevent build-up and ensures the system continues to operate efficiently. Many models are designed for easy access, so you can keep them in good condition without specialist tools.
