Moving house can easily feel overwhelming. There’s so much to think about – from giving notice and packing boxes to updating your address and cleaning your old place. But with a clear plan and the right order of tasks, you can save time, stress, and even money. Here’s a practical guide to help you prioritise your moving tasks and make the process as smooth as possible.

Start Early – and Create a Timeline

A successful move begins well before moving day. As soon as you know your moving date, start planning. Write down every task and spread them out over the coming weeks. This gives you a clear overview and prevents last-minute chaos.

  • 6–8 weeks before moving: Give notice to your landlord or confirm your completion date if you’re buying. Get quotes from removal companies or book a van, and start sorting through your belongings.
  • 3–4 weeks before: Buy packing materials, begin packing items you rarely use, and inform utility providers, your broadband supplier, and subscription services of your move.
  • 1 week before: Pack the remaining items, finalise your moving day plan, and keep essentials like keys, cleaning supplies, and important documents easily accessible.

A realistic timeline helps you tackle one thing at a time and keeps stress levels down.

Declutter Before You Pack

One of the biggest mistakes people make is packing everything without sorting first. That only means you’ll end up moving things you don’t really need. Use the move as an opportunity to declutter.

Work systematically, one room at a time. Divide your belongings into three categories – keep, donate/sell, and bin. Old paperwork, clothes you never wear, and broken gadgets don’t need to come with you. The less you take, the easier (and cheaper) your move will be.

Pack Smart – and in the Right Order

When it’s time to pack, start with the things you use least. Seasonal clothes, books, decorations, and spare kitchenware can go first. Everyday essentials should be packed last – and clearly labelled as “open first”.

A great tip is to prepare a “first night” box with the basics: toothbrush, change of clothes, phone charger, kettle, tea or coffee, toilet roll, and a few snacks. That way, you won’t have to rummage through boxes when you arrive.

Label every box with both the room and its contents. It makes unpacking far easier and helps removal staff place things in the right spot.

Coordinate Moving Day

Moving day itself needs careful coordination. Make sure everyone helping knows their role – especially if friends or family are lending a hand. Plan who carries what and where each piece of furniture should go in the new home.

If you’re using a removal company, confirm the time and cost a few days before. Check access at both properties: is there parking for the van, a lift, or any restrictions? Small details can make a big difference to how smoothly the day runs.

Don’t Forget the Practical Details

Once the boxes are unpacked, there are still a few important tasks to tick off. Submit your change of address to Royal Mail for mail redirection, and update your details with your bank, GP, employer, insurance provider, and any memberships or subscriptions.

Take final meter readings for gas, electricity, and water, and set up new accounts at your new address. It’s also wise to take photos of meter readings and any existing damage in both properties for your records.

Give Yourself Time to Settle In

Moving isn’t just a logistical challenge – it’s an emotional one too. It takes time to feel at home in a new place. Allow yourself to unpack gradually, explore your new neighbourhood, and make the space your own step by step.

Once the practicalities are sorted, you can focus on the positives: new surroundings, new opportunities, and a fresh start.

A Moving Plan That Works

The best moving plan is one that fits your lifestyle. By tackling tasks in the right order – from planning and decluttering to packing and updating your details – you’ll stay organised and avoid common pitfalls.

Moving will always take effort, but with structure and foresight, it becomes manageable – and maybe even a chance to start anew with lighter baggage, both physically and mentally.
