The soakaway is usually installed in the garden, connected to the downpipes from your roof via a pipe. When it rains, water flows into the soakaway, where it is held until it slowly infiltrates the ground.

- Backfill and finish. Wrap the crates with the geotextile, then cover with soil and turf or gravel as desired.

Maintenance and Lifespan
A soakaway requires very little maintenance, but it’s important to clean the silt trap or gully regularly—typically once a year. If this becomes blocked, water will not flow freely, and the soakaway’s performance will decline.
Modern soakaway crates can last for several decades—often 30 to 50 years—if installed correctly and protected from silt build-up.
Keep an eye on how quickly water drains away after heavy rain. If you notice standing water or slow drainage, it may indicate that the soakaway or surrounding soil needs attention.
