Rooms exposed to high humidity – such as bathrooms, utility rooms, and basements – place special demands on the floor structure and surface treatment. It’s not enough for the floor to look good; it must also withstand water, steam, and temperature changes without damage. If the floor is not properly treated, you risk mould, discolouration, or even rot in the subfloor. In this guide, we’ll take you through the process step by step so you can ensure your floor in a moist room is both durable and safe.
Understanding the Challenge: Why Moisture Is a Problem
Moisture moves through materials and can accumulate beneath the floor covering if ventilation and waterproofing are not properly considered. In rooms with high humidity – such as bathrooms and laundry areas – the risk is particularly high. That’s why every layer, from the subfloor to the surface finish, must be chosen and installed with care.
A properly constructed floor in a moist room should:
- Prevent moisture from penetrating the structure.
- Allow any residual moisture to evaporate safely.
- Be easy to clean and resistant to water and cleaning agents.
Step 1: Choose the Right Materials
Start by selecting materials that are approved for use in wet or humid environments. This applies to the subfloor, adhesive, waterproof membrane, and the floor covering itself.
- Subfloor: Use concrete or cement-based boards that can tolerate moisture. Avoid chipboard or MDF, which absorb water and swell.
- Waterproof membrane: A damp-proof membrane or liquid-applied waterproofing system is essential. It should cover the entire floor area and extend slightly up the walls to create a watertight “tray”.
- Floor covering: Tiles, vinyl, and epoxy are classic choices. If you prefer wood, choose a dense hardwood such as teak or oak and treat it with a suitable oil or lacquer.
Step 2: Ensure Proper Base and Slope
In wet rooms, the floor must be designed to direct water towards the drain. In bathrooms, this means creating a slope of about 1–2 cm per metre towards the waste outlet. This prevents water from pooling in corners or along walls.
Before continuing, check that the base is level and stable. Any unevenness can compromise the waterproofing and lead to cracks or leaks later on.
Step 3: Apply the Waterproof Membrane Correctly
The waterproof membrane is the most important layer in your floor system. It can be a liquid-applied membrane, a sheet membrane, or a combination of both. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.
- Make sure the surface is clean, dry, and free from dust.
- Apply the membrane in two coats using a roller or brush.
- Reinforce corners, joints, and pipe penetrations with sealing tape or collars.
- Allow the membrane to dry completely before proceeding.
A properly installed membrane is invisible once finished, but it’s the key to a long-lasting, watertight floor.
Step 4: Lay the Floor Covering
Once the membrane has cured, you can install the floor covering. The method depends on the material you’ve chosen:
- Tiles: Use a flexible, waterproof tile adhesive and grout. Ensure joints are even and fully sealed.
- Vinyl: Fully bond the vinyl to the substrate and heat-weld the seams for a watertight finish.
- Epoxy: Apply as a liquid coating that cures into a seamless, highly durable surface.
- Wood: Leave expansion gaps around the edges and treat the surface with moisture-resistant oil or varnish.
Step 5: Surface Treatment and Maintenance
Even the best floor needs regular care. The surface treatment protects against wear and moisture but must be renewed periodically.
- Tiles: Clean the grout regularly and consider applying a grout sealer.
- Vinyl and epoxy: Wash with mild cleaning agents – avoid abrasive powders or solvents.
- Wood: Re-oil or re-lacquer as needed, and always wipe up water immediately.
A well-maintained floor not only lasts longer but also looks better and reduces the risk of moisture damage.
Step 6: Check the Ventilation
Even the most waterproof floor can’t handle moisture problems alone. Make sure the room has effective ventilation so humidity can escape. A mechanical extractor fan or a humidity-sensing ventilation system is often a worthwhile investment, especially in bathrooms and utility rooms.
